The presence of hair on the body is a characteristic of mammals. Its function is to provide insulation to keep the body warm and to protect the skin. In humans, we have lost the need for insulating hair over much of our bodies, but we retain small sparse hairs over most of the body surface. Body hair in other mammals in very important. Hair can provide camouflage, by being colored or marked, as in tigers and zebras. In most mammals, large hairs around the muzzle and other parts of the face are a very important sense organ. (A cat relies on these hairs while moving through bushes and undergrowth to till if it can squeeze through a gap or avoid an obstruction. The larger these whiskers are, the more important they are for that mammal.
